Description: The story of Drifters takes place during Japan’s Sengoku period (roughly XV to XVII century), a time of constant warring between the island’s states, and a natural setting of choice for samurai stories.
So, this is the new manga from Hellsing’s mangaka. Well, I’ve never truly read Hellsing, it’s one of those classics that is in my to read list but, I just didn’t get to it yet. I’ll try to read it now that it’s over. Anyway, knowing how Hellsing is supposedly so good and this new manga promises the same, I decided to give it a try. There’s also the fact that it’s a samurai manga, which I love. Even though it may not seem like it, I’ve read a good number of very good samurai manga but, most of them were finished series or I just hadn’t started the blog yet. By the way, I kind of went on a pause with Vagabond when I reached the current chapters (awesome manga), I’ll catch up soon and start blogging it too.

Now, about the drifters, the description doesn’t really give us much hints about the story, other than it’s setting. So, what’s going on? The story starts with Toyohisa, member of the Shimazu clan, in the middle of some kind of lost battle, still, their main objective is to allow part of the troops to return to Satsuma. For that, Toyohisa and some others are going to "sacrifice" themselves.
Their enemy is the Red Devil of the 2nd branch of the Tokugawa. Toyohisa charges forward, he recklessly lets himself be stabbed so he can get close to Naomasa, leader of the enemies’ current attack. After managing to wound him, the 2nd branch retreats. Toyohisa is left to die without the possibility of a true victory.

He wonders around for a bit and, supposedly, dies. He then is immediately transfered to some strange world, that looks much like a public social service of our time.
So, this isn’t going to be a normal samurai story after all. The cliffhanger was good. I’m guessing he died and is in some kind of passage to the other world, although here, they really have a service with employees and everything lol. I’m really curious to see what this really is and what will happen to Toyhisa.

As for the art, I’m still getting used to this style but, most scenes were awesome, specially the cover. As for the action, it wasn’t really about fighting for now. I’m very excited about this manga.
